Turkmenistan Proposes To Hold Nam Conference Dedicated To Peace And Security

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed to hold a conference of the Organisation for Security and Peace, Azerbaijan's Trend news agency reported quoting the local media as saying on Friday.

"In this regard, I propose to hold the conference of the NAM member-states, dedicated to strengthening the global dialogue for peace, security and human development in Ashgabat in 2015," the Turkmen leader said at the 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, Iran.

Turkmenistan will celebrate the 20th anniversary of membership in the NAM in 2015. The country will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of acquiring a status of positive neutrality.

"Turkmenistan's participation in the Non-Aligned Movement has special significance in the context of historical development and recognition of the international legal status of permanent neutrality of our country," Berdimuhamedov said.

He added that Turkmenistan's principal position is that any conflict situations in the world must be resolved only by political means and through negotiations.

The Turkmen President stressed that Turkmenistan considers intensifying the disarmament and ensuring the non-proliferation regime as one of the NAM main tasks today.

"We are ready to take an active part in this joint work realizing that it will be implemented in the context of collective international efforts to reduce stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction and to create zones free of nuclear weapons," the Turkmen leader added.

Berdimuhamedov emphasised that Turkmenistan was the first country which assumed a role of a coordinator to fulfill a treaty on a zone free of nuclear weapons in Central Asia.

"We will continue supporting the constructive proposals of the countries and international organisations to promote disarmament," the Turkmen President said.
